About Monkey’s Fist

With a gorgeous blue slate Devon stonework frontage, and London brickwork around the door and windows, Monkeys Fist (located on a quiet road close to central Salcombe) is a superb holiday home, boasting modern artwork and interiors, and harbour views.

The Space

Once you step through the front stable door (lovely in the summer if you want to let the cool breeze in), you’ll find yourself immediately in the kitchen. The ground floor is open plan, with a beautifully appointed modern kitchen packed with storage and equipped with everything you could need including a Rangemaster double oven with grill and induction hob, dishwasher, fridge and freezer, kettle, toaster and Nespresso machine. There’s a very stylish oak and glass open staircase dividing the living room (which has plenty of seating and space for lounging) and dining room and to the rear you access the deck for outdoor dining.

Throughout the property is some lovely photography of wild skies and seas from the artist, Greg Ramsden who has a gallery in Salcombe.

The stairs lead up to a splendid Master bedroom on the third floor with a super king size bed and en suite bathroom with a sea view over the rooftops, and a balcony with bistro set, where you can sit out and enjoy your morning coffee. There’s even a telescope for you to use for boat spotting or to enjoy the night sky.

Based on a quiet no-through road, with a play park across from it, it’s great for young families, although perhaps not suitable for toddlers due to being a three-storey property with staircases leading to all levels. You’ll also find plenty of room in Monkey’s Fist; on the first floor there is a twin room on the sea side of the house, with a bunk room on the quiet street side of the house (so ideal for putting the younger members in), both designed very tastefully with pleasing colour schemes. These both use the large family sharing bathroom which has a combined bath and overhead shower. The twin room also has a beautiful desk placed in front of the sash window, so if you need to work or write, you have a room with a view out to sea – although you may find yourself gazing out rather than being productive.

Downstairs in the basement, there is another bedroom with a king size bed and en suite bathroom, also with a combined bath and overhead shower. There is a utility room with Miele washing machine and tumble dryer, also in the basement.

Outside there is a long-paved private garden area, with an outdoor shower, perfect for when you’re returned from the beach and want to wash off all the sand between your toes. Here you will also find a pizza oven, which is a lovely addition but not a fast-food option. You will need to dedicate time to it as it takes a while to heat up. If you don’t want to make an evening of it creating your own pizzas, there are plenty of very good establishments in the town that serve a little piece-a of Italy!

The garden itself backs onto the Courtenay community children’s playground.

If you’re not familiar with the term ‘monkey’s fist’ be assured that it isn’t a small primate’s clenched hand, but is in fact this – ‘A monkey’s fist is a nautical knot and was traditionally used by sailors to add extra weight at the end of a heaving line, used to throw a cable from ship to shore. The knot, often containing an extra weight, would be tied at one end of the line, and the other end would be tied to the heavier cable.’

Location

Salcombe is a charming little town on the bank of what is often described as the prettiest harbour in England.

Picture-perfect pastel-coloured houses make up a Positano-like scene overlooking water, sandy beaches and rolling green hills of the surrounding countryside.

Salcombe has a uniquely wonderful array of shops ranging from an acclaimed butcher and baker to art galleries selling serious contemporary works and chic boutiques.

Getting around

Stepping out from Monkey's Fist you are almost right in the heart of salcombe, only a few minutes walk from all of the lovely shops restaurants and four great pubs.

The Harbour Hotel is a seven minutes by foot and has a gorgeous bar and restaurant as well as an award winning spa with a pool.

Catch the gorgeous little Ferry to be on the sandy beaches of East Portlemouth in minutes or stroll almost an exact mile along the coastal path to North Sands and the famous Winking Prawn.

You won't need a car to enjoy Salcombe. In fact in the summer we'd recommend leaving it at home - Salcombe is bustling and movement on the roads and parking are tedious.

Whilst there is unfortunately no parking available outside the property, it is very close to the centre of town with the nearest parking at Creek Long Stay Car Park on Gould Road, which is less than a five-minute, short walk away.

Reviews

Gorgeous house, beautifully decorated in an amazing central location. Freya was really helpful, sharing clear and detailed instructions on how to get there and local recommendations. We can’t wait to go back!

Freya’s place was spotless and felt newly decorated and furbished. Central location for the ferry and shops. We had young children with us so the best thing was proximity to the great playground opposite and Cranches famous sweet shop at the bottom of the hill. Freya was always available for any questions and flexible with check out which was so helpful/ We would book again in a flash.

Monkey’s Fist is very conveniently located and is a charming and comfortable home to stay in. Very well equipped and thoughtful touches that made us feel well looked after. Freya is a great host. Such a lovely view from the top master bedroom! Our family, adult children and their boyfriends had a wonderful Easter break in Salcombe.
